Highlights from IPL 2018 Player Retention Announcement

The Indian Premier League auctions were as exciting as always however, the one thing that changed the dynamics of the whole thing is the changes to the retention policy by the BCCI. The eight IPL teams announced the players they would retain at the IPL 2018 Player Retention event, which was held on 4 January 2018 in Mumbai. There were some obvious names in the retention list such as Virat Kohli, MS Dhoni and others.

What is the retention policy for IPL?

The retention rule in IPL allows the franchisees to retain a certain number of players. The number of players that can be retained by each team is restricted to a certain number that keeps changing with every IPL season. For the IPL 2018, the retention rule allows teams to retain a maximum of 5 players. The players are retained by their respective teams before auctions, which means these players with not get into the auction pool. The teams will get a second chance at retention during the auction by using the RTM card.

Interesting details from the IPL retention event

The IPL 2018 Retention Event started with a lot of speculations. As this event was televised, fans from across the world were glued to their TV screens to see which teams retained their favourites.

The event started with Mumbai Indians giving their 3 member names for retention – Rohit Sharma, Hardik Pandya and Jasprit Bumrah. Rishabh Pant, Chris Morris and Shreyas Iyer were retained by the Delhi Daredevils while Chennai Super Kings and Royal Challengers Bangalore announced their first players for retention respectively as MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli. Suresh Raina and Ravindra Jadeja to join Dhoni and AB De Villiers and Sarfaraz Khan were the other two players apart from Virat Kohli retained by RCB.

Kings XI Punjab retained only Axar Patel and Rajasthan Royals retained Steve Smith. Sunil Narine and Andre Russel were retained by KKR but surprisingly Gautam Gambhir was not included. Sunrisers Hyderabad retained their master players – David Warner and Bhuvneshwar Kumar.
